Joseph Pilates developed his method in the early 20th century — a revolutionary approach to movement that emphasized core control, breath, and whole-body coordination decades before modern exercise science validated these principles. But the original system was developed without the benefit of contemporary biomechanics research, and some of its tenets — particularly around spinal position — are now understood to be suboptimal for clinical populations.
STOTT PILATES® was developed by Moira and Lindsay Merrithew in collaboration with physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, and exercise scientists to create a contemporary, evidence-based evolution of the Pilates method. The core innovation was the adoption of neutral spine alignment — the position of the spine that places the least stress on discs, joints, and ligaments — as the foundational principle of all programming.
The result is a methodology that delivers the extraordinary benefits of Pilates — core strength, postural improvement, movement quality, body awareness — while being safe and appropriate for post-surgical clients, people with chronic conditions, older adults, and high-performance athletes. It is the methodology of choice for physical therapists, sports medicine clinicians, and elite athletic training programs worldwide.
STOTT breathing patterns coordinate inhalation and exhalation with movement to facilitate core activation, spinal decompression, and the parasympathetic nervous system state that optimal movement requires.
Neutral pelvis — the position that preserves the natural lumbar curve — is the foundational spinal position in STOTT programming. Imprinted pelvis is used only when clinically indicated.
The rib cage must remain in contact with the spine — avoiding the anterior rib flare that increases lumbar lordosis and reduces deep stabilizer activation throughout the exercise.
The shoulder blades must be correctly stabilized and mobilized to support arm movements without loading the cervical spine or compromising rotator cuff function.
The head and neck must remain in neutral cervical alignment — avoiding the excessive flexion of classical Pilates that can stress cervical discs and facet joints.
Each principle reflects a biomechanically evidence-based approach to joint loading and muscle activation — producing a system that is simultaneously more effective and safer for modern populations.
The shift from flat-back to neutral spine alignment is the most significant clinical advancement in modern Pilates — reducing disc stress, protecting facet joints, and enabling appropriate deep stabilizer activation.
STOTT exercise progressions are built on current exercise science — matching load, range, and complexity to each client's neuromuscular capacity and progressing systematically without overloading healing or adapting tissues.
STOTT PILATES® developed the first comprehensive post-rehabilitation and athletic conditioning specialization programs in the Pilates field — bringing clinical-grade credentialing to movement therapy.
The STOTT approach specifies spring settings, body positions, and exercise parameters with a precision that allows clinical-grade load management for every population from post-surgical to elite athlete.
STOTT certification requires more training hours than virtually any other Pilates certification system — comprehensive anatomy, biomechanics, and hands-on teaching evaluated by master instructors.
STOTT PILATES® is the methodology of choice for physical therapy clinics, sports medicine programs, and elite athletic facilities worldwide — reflecting its standing as the most rigorously evidence-based system available.
STOTT PILATES full certification requires hundreds of hours of anatomy, biomechanics, and hands-on teaching training — more than virtually any other Pilates certification system. Devi Rieker holds full certification plus Post-Rehabilitation Specialist and Athletic Conditioning Specialist credentials — the complete clinical suite.
What is the difference between STOTT PILATES and classical Pilates?
The primary difference is spinal alignment philosophy. Classical Pilates often uses a flattened lumbar spine (imprinting). STOTT uses neutral spine alignment — the position with the least joint stress — as the foundational position. STOTT also incorporates modern exercise science principles that were not available when the original method was developed.
Is STOTT PILATES harder than regular Pilates?
STOTT PILATES is not necessarily harder — it is more precise. The attention to biomechanical detail, breathing coordination, and neutral alignment makes every exercise more technically demanding and more therapeutically effective at any resistance level.
Why does D2M use the STOTT PILATES method?
STOTT PILATES is the most evidence-based, clinically rigorous Pilates methodology available. Its post-rehabilitation and athletic conditioning specialization programs are unmatched in the field. For a studio serving clients with clinical needs and performance goals, STOTT is the only methodology that meets the standard D2M is committed to.
Is STOTT PILATES appropriate for beginners?
Yes. STOTT PILATES exercises can be regressed to complete beginner level and progressed to elite athletic challenge — the same foundational principles apply at every level. Many of our most successful clients began with no prior Pilates experience.
How is STOTT PILATES different from mat Pilates classes at a gym?
Group mat Pilates at a gym typically follows a generic sequence with no individual assessment or modification. STOTT PILATES at D2M begins with a full postural and movement assessment, uses the complete apparatus suite for precise load management, and is programmed individually for every client's body and goals.
Does D2M offer STOTT PILATES for people with injuries or medical conditions?
Yes — this is one of D2M's core strengths. The STOTT Post-Rehabilitation Specialist credential is specifically designed for clients with medical conditions, post-surgical recovery needs, and chronic pain. Every program is built around the individual's specific condition, history, and goals.
Book a session at D2M and experience the STOTT PILATES® methodology that has set the standard for clinical Pilates worldwide — applied to your body, your goals, and your movement history.
